What a pet portrait is for
A pet portrait is handmade artwork of an animal you live with, or lived with. Dogs and cats are the most common subjects; other animals can be considered when the photograph is clear. The drawing is not a cartoon and not a generated “pet filter.” It is Ammama looking at the way light sits on fur and at the expression that made you take the picture in the first place. Pencil is gentle with grey muzzles. Color keeps a collar, a coat, the rust of a familiar blanket.

Choose the pet subject
Select pencil or color and the pet option so the page is planned for an animal rather than a human sitting.

Send a photograph at their level
Eyes and the shape of the head matter most. A picture taken down at their height is usually kinder than one from the doorway.

Mention the animal, not a breed label
A name and a short note — “the white on the chest is important” — helps more than a long description.

Drawn from that one look

Photographs
Photographs animals will sit still for
Pets rarely pose. Sharpness and the eyes still decide whether the likeness can be held.

Focus on the eyes. A soft nose with a clear gaze is more useful than a perfect body that is slightly blurred.

Avoid heavy motion blur and very dark rooms. Window light on a resting animal is often enough.

Collars and tags can be included or left off — say which you prefer.

If the animal has passed, send the photograph you trust most, even if it is older. Do not send a picture you do not want remembered.

More than one animal
Two animals can share a page when you have clear photographs of each. Mention the pairing in the notes.
A person and a pet
A portrait of someone with their animal is welcome when both faces — human and animal — can be read in the references.
Do you only draw dogs and cats?
Dogs and cats are the usual subjects. Other animals can be considered when the photograph shows them clearly. Mention the animal when you order.
My only photo is a little blurry. Is that all right?
A little softness can be worked with. If the eyes are lost or the head is smeared by motion, another photograph will serve better.
Can this be a memorial?
Yes. Many pet portraits are made after an animal is gone. The photograph you choose becomes the reference. No extra ceremony is required unless you want a note on the page.
